NSANZ Auckland Chapter Newsletter JULY 2010

A word from our President

Dear Members and Friends,

It’s encouraging to see so many speakers stepping forward to become accredited with NSANZ. As we lift our standards as a Chapter, the whole organisation and speaking industry as a whole takes a step forward.   As we demand more excellence from ourselves and each other, we have more to offer our clients and we can  become THE organisation of choice for all professional speakers.

In the last couple of months, we’ve had over a dozen speakers apply for accreditation. That’s more accreditation in a couple months than we’ve had in many years, so well done to all who applied. Let’s envision the trend continuing in this positive direction.

Last month, we experienced another inspiring meeting beginning with a showcase of new as well as experienced speakers. Thanks to Jennie Vickers for coordinating and MCing the evening as well as to the speakers and evaluators who participated. This year, the Auckland NSANZ committee has organised three of these popular showcases so far, with a fourth organised for the 28th September from 6-7pm prior to the regular meeting.

After the showcase on the 29th of June, we listened to a moving talk by Allie Mooney, CSP, who encouraged us to follow our passion and to find a purpose larger than ourselves. Her advice was that the ‘more you speak, the more you speak’, and she demonstrated how our ‘educations’ do not always have to take a traditional path. She reminded us that our challenges often become our greatest gifts.

After Allie’s talk, we enjoyed ‘Ask the Expert’ small group discussions with Ngahihi o te ra Bidois, Hannah Samuel, Bill James, John Shackleton, CSP, Ann Andrews, CSP, and Allie Mooney, CSP. Thank you to David Whyte for MCing the evening. Thank you also to Roberta Budvietas who organised a successful Professional Development Series launch last month with Hannah Samuel and Hugo Meares as our workshop presenters as well as a second workshop day with Linda Hutchings and John Shackleton, CSP, as presenters. It’s not too late to join in on the series, as there are two more workshop days scheduled this year. See below for details.

Please join us on the 27th July for our ‘Social Media’ evening with a talk by Linda Coles followed by hands-on small group discussions.

Until then, keep building your sustainable business foundation to strongly support you while you focus on giving your gift and shining your light.

Best Regards

Sally Mabelle

You’ve heard all about social media, you may using it to some extent – now is the opportunity to learn how you, as a speaker, can use social media to your advantage! At our July meeting, Linda Coles, Social Media Expert will share:

Successful Social Media Strategies for Speakers
"We don’t have a choice on whether we do social media, the question is how well we do it.” - Eric Qualman

A recent Nielsen study showed that 78% of people trusted peer recommendations or word of mouth marketing and only 14% trusted advertisements. What does that do to your conventional marketing strategy?

In this session, we will look in detail how to use the following sites to promote and build  your speaking career:

  • LinkedIn: Find out how to showcase your own brand on a professional and business oriented  networking platform.
  • Facebook: Learn how to make the most from your business Facebook page with the right look, content, engagement and Facebook ads.
  • Twitter: Where does it fit in, not only as a platform to publish what you have to say, but for listening and liaising with people you want to connect with.

By using the social media tools correctly, you can put  yourself on the radar of those you want to do business with in the best possible light, people you may not ordinarily come into contact with. I will share with you  real life stories to back this up.

There is so much to squeeze in to this session, so be prepared to take plenty of notes to action the tips ASAP!

Also, in our second session, we will be exploring the social media topic further, with our popular interactive passion-cafe style tables. We will have experts facilitating on blogging, writing on the web, protecting your online reputation and more!

Originally from the United Kingdom, Linda has helped many companies and businesspeople there and in New Zealand to gain a competitive advantage in their industries through inventive use of social media. What's new with Wellington Branch

Greetings from the Absolutely Fabulously Windy City!

Despite our fantastic usual weather, our last monthly meeting showed our members' true dedication to the speaking industry and their personal education - as quite a few members and invited guests filled the room to hear fellow speaker Janice Davies sharing her personal journey as a speaker and the establishment of Self Day. Her message and mission to improve Kiwis' self esteem was a highly inspiring and eye opening one that left us all to reflect on our own lives and how we contribute to our cause through the art of speaking.

Towards the end of the night, John Faisandier WOWed us with some psychodrama to help us overcome life obstacles (mostly lolly wrappers and wallets on the floor...oh you had to be there!).

And finishing off the night, was Siobhan Hanley - Wellington's first member to sign up this year, who shared her insights of being an NSANZ member as well as being involved with the Action Team. She invited everyone, with a brief to join and come along to the exciting upcoming Professional Development Series, which Wellington Branch is proud to be kicking off later this month, with a strong team and some great speakers backing it!

Keep warm, New Zealand! Oh, and please follow us on Facebook! :)

What's new with Northland Branch

First showcase successfully completed! Well done to Rhett Brown and Paul Henderson. It was great to hear some of our speakers speak on totally different topics and well don on taking up the challenge!  And the excellence didn’t stop there! If any of you have heard Janice Davies speak you’ll know what a treat we were in for last month having her as our visiting guest speaker.  Janice shared with us some of her insights into what has worked for her in promoting and developing her career as a speaker, and I know we all walked away with some great tips and new ideas to help us further our careers as speakers - and at the end of the day, that’s what NSANZ is about! Janice’s energy and enthusiasm too were also much appreciated and we hope to get other speakers of her calibre up from our ‘big bro/sister’ chapter Auckland in coming months too!

We were also pleased to formally welcome several new members to our branch and especially grateful to welcome to the Northland NSANZ committee Rhett Brown and thank Jason Barrell for stepping up to help out too.

Rhett, Jason and I were pleased and privileged to attend Auckland’s last meeting as well and were blown away by Allison Mooney’s presentation (talk about putting the SP in CSP) and the range of showcase speakers was excellent. NSANZ really is an amazing organisation to be part of. Thanks for your positive energy and support to the many who have offered it everyone!

If any of you would like to come up and visit our beautiful ‘neck of the woods’ please contact Jaki on 09 430 7959, we’d like to see you at one of our meetings. Next month we are having Tom O’Neil – Thanks Tom! Details to follow, watch this space!

Cheers!
